How PEMF works: the physics, minus the marketing

PEMF devices pass pulsed electromagnetic fields through tissue. Here is what the mechanism plausibly does, what parameters describe a device, and where the marketing runs ahead of evidence.

The short answer

PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) devices generate a time-varying magnetic field that induces a small electric field in nearby tissue, according to Faraday's law. Consumer hardware varies on three parameters: intensity (field strength, often milligauss to hundreds of gauss), frequency (typically 1–100 Hz, sometimes higher), and waveform. The physics is real; the question is whether specific parameter sets produce specific wellness effects in people — and there, the consumer evidence is thin and inconsistent.

The mechanism, briefly

A coil carrying a changing current produces a changing magnetic field. By Faraday’s law, that field induces a small electric field in the tissue around it. That is the entire physics — uncontroversial and well understood.

What is not settled is what that induced field does at the intensities and frequencies consumer devices use, in a living human, reproducibly.

Where marketing runs ahead

Two habits to watch:

  • “More is better” intensity claims with no dose–response data behind them.
  • Citing animal or in-vitro studies as if they proved a wellness effect in people.

A credible claim names the population, the parameter set, the duration, and the measured outcome — not just “studies show.”

The honest bottom line

Frequently asked questions

Is stronger always better?
No. Published protocols use a very wide range of intensities and there is no consumer-grade consensus that "more gauss" means "more effect." Treat intensity as a specification difference, not a quality ranking.
Are consumer devices the same as clinical PEMF?
Not necessarily. Some clinical PEMF systems hold regulatory clearances for narrow indications (for example, certain bone-fracture non-unions). Those clearances do not transfer to consumer hardware or to other uses. We cover the evidence separately.
