Bazi basics: the four pillars, in plain English
Chinese astrology starts from four pillars — year, month, day and hour — each a pair of characters. A beginner-friendly map of what the chart actually contains and what it does not claim.
The short answer
Bazi ("eight characters") is built from your birth moment: year, month, day and hour, each expressed as a heavenly stem and earthly branch pair, giving eight characters in total. The system reads the balance of the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) across those pillars. It is a tradition of pattern-reading, not a predictive science, and is published here for entertainment and cultural interest.

The core idea
“Ba” (eight) “zi” (characters). Your birth moment is mapped onto the traditional Chinese calendar, and each of four units — year, month, day, hour — becomes a pair: a heavenly stem and an earthly branch. Eight characters, read as a whole.
The four pillars
| Pillar | Theme (traditional) | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Year | Ancestry, early environment | Stem + branch of the birth year |
| Month | Career, upbringing | Stem + branch of the birth month |
| Day | Self, partnership | Stem + branch of the birth day (the “day master” is you) |
| Hour | Children, later life | Stem + branch of the birth hour |
The day master — the heavenly stem of the day pillar — is traditionally treated as the central character representing the person.
The five elements
Each stem and branch carries one of five phases: wood, fire, earth, metal, water. They relate by two cycles:
- Generating: wood → fire → earth → metal → water → wood.
- Controlling: wood → earth → water → fire → metal → wood.
A reading traditionally looks at how the elements balance across the eight characters — which are strong, which are missing, which support the day master.
What this is, and is not
Bazi is a rich literary and cultural system, centuries old, with its own internal logic. It is not a validated method for predicting events, and we make no such claim. Treat it as you would a tarot spread or a horoscope column: a lens, a story, entertainment.
The zodiac calculator here only computes the mechanical parts — your year pillar and element — with the Lichun caveat that many sites get wrong.
